There are quite a lot of Nikon SLR digital cameras in the market that make for worthy investments, and one of these is the Nikon D90. The D90 is one of the Nikon SLR digital cameras that are suitable for casual users and beginners especially if they’re not that concerned about the kit lens. The D90, however, gets plus points for having the brand’s famous intuitive layout and video capabilities.

I was already thinking of getting the D90 even though what I really wanted was the D300, because of its weatherproof features and sturdy magnesium body. In the end, however, I decided that it wasn’t worth shelling out the extra $600 just for a better camera body. The D90 and D300 have the same sensor and ISO capability range. Some reviews on Nikon SLR digital cameras say that the D300 pales in comparison to D90 in terms of noise reduction.

The D90 also has a superb control layout; single button choices are available on the left side of the screen which allow you to easily access image quality, ISO, white balance, and view previous shots. Yes, the D90 has video capabilities, but that’s not why I decided to buy it instead of the D300. Sadly, the video feature fails to meet expectations because of its lack of autofocus and sound. It makes for a good extra feature, but it’s lacking in essential features that would’ve made it a good video camera.

A lot of users like the kit lens that comes with the D90, but I think you can get better zooms from Nikon that falls within the same price range of the D90. The selling price for the 18-105mm Vibration Reduction (VR) is reportedly $400. I got my Nikon 70-300mm VR for around $485, and it has a far better build with a rubber gasket and metal mount. The kit lens that comes with the D90 has no plastic mount and rubber gasket, which makes it feel a bit cheap compared to the 70-300mm VR I bought.

If you’re a casual or average user and all you need is basic lens, then the D90 kit lens would probably do. But if you’re aspiring to go semi-pro or pro, I say you go for the same VR I bought. All in all, the D90 is a great camera even though it does lack in the weather proofing department. I give it a four out of 5 rating.

It took Nikon three years to develop this camera. From its launch, the Nikon I had a lot of problems. This was rectified by the company and another model called the Nikon M was introduced in 1949 which was well accepted by the market.

Nobody likes to be constrained by a budget, least of all me, and even more so, by wife. But hey, that’s a story for another discussion. Let’s stick to talking about digital cameras here, and more specifically Nikon digital SLR cameras. It’s no secret, that Nikon makes some of the best digital SLRs out there, and they have quite a few to choose from.

For this discussion, we’re going to stay away from the beginner entry level SLR models, and focus on those cameras that appeal to those of us with more photography skill, or simply a bigger budget that compensates for a lack of skill. I don’t really fit into either of these categories at the moment, but hey, things are changing.

Lets start with the Nikon D90. A camera that just beats the $1,000 entry barrier, but comes with a generous 12.3 megapixels. Now I know you may have read my other discussions about how megapixels really don’t matter, but that works better for people and cameras that don’t have many. The D90 comes with other nice features like dust control, live view (all you purists out there just need to get over it), and some nice face detection abilities.

For the more advanced photographer (not the same as the guy with the bigger wallet), you should have a look at the D200. If your looking for speed from a camera, this baby’s got it. By speed, I’m talking about a fast shutter speed, and the ability to take rapid fire pictures one right after the other. It’s been out for a while, since 2005, which explains why it’s only got 10 megapixels, but it’s also a testament to how good a camera it really is. To still be a viable model, almost four years after it’s launch.

Nikon digital camera problems are few, but they do exist. The cameras themselves are excellent cameras for the money. If you have battery problems, you might need to consult with a repair person to see if there is a problem with the batteries. Sometimes on the Coolpix digital cameras, the lens will not retract if the battery goes dead. This could present a problem, but can be corrected by an authorized Nikon repair person. Other than that, you will find that Nikon digital cameras are well worth the money and deliver quality images.

I owned a number of Nikon SLR digital cameras so far, and in this article I will talk about the D90 model.

D90 Pros

- The ISO capability is the same as that of Nikon D300.
- The layout is very intuitive, something that Nikon is recognized for.
- The number of frames per second, card access and fast focus
- The ability to make videos, a first for a DSLR

Cons

- The video doesn’t have AF and the audio quality is weak
- The kit lens is not as good as Nikon claims

If the toughness of the kit lens that comes with the camera isn’t important for you, this camera is a good choice. If you’re a bit more advanced and you want better lenses, you can wait a bit and buy only the body, which shows up after the release of the kit.

When I decided to buy the D90, I already had a period of research where I looked at a number of different cameras. What I really wanted was the D300 model, because it was waterproof and it had a magnesium body, but the extra $600 wasn’t worth those features.

The sensor of the model I bought, the D90, is the same with the one that comes with the D300 camera, so the ISO capabilities are the same. Some of the reviews I read said that the noise reduction of the D90 model is better than it was for D300. If you also use the Nikon VR lenses, you can take good photos at very reduced shutter speeds.

The layout of the controls is very good. The choices that have single buttons are all well chosen: image quality, previous shot, ISO and white balance.

When I bought the digital camera, making videos wasn’t my first choice, and that was a good thing since the quality isn’t the best. You can easily buy $200 digital cameras that will take much better videos than this DSLR can. I don’t understand why they would add a video feature if they didn’t do it well.

Many people will do OK with the kit lens of this camera, but it could’ve been much better.

All in all, the camera is very good. I just wish it had some weather proofing, though at this price you can’t really expect that. Besides that, this camera does it all at an OK level. Some problems exist though, and the four stars rating reflects just that.
